EMC Testing Cost: Planning Your Budget and Quotation

EMC Testing Cost: Planning Your Budget and Quotation

An EMC testing budget starts with the product and the work required to assess it. A focused emissions evaluation, an emissions-and-immunity program and testing a product containing several radios involve different activities. The quotation should identify those activities so the manufacturer can compare scope as well as price.

Build the budget around the test program

Define the destination markets, intended use and applicable requirements before estimating laboratory time. Confirm the product configurations, power supplies, interfaces and operating modes that need evaluation. A quotation based on incomplete information may need revision when the actual equipment arrives.

Budget componentWhat to establish
MeasurementsRequired emissions and immunity tests, frequency coverage and configurations.
Setup and operationInstallation, accessories, operating instructions and functional monitoring.
Engineering investigationAny pre-scans, fault investigation or comparisons of design changes.
DocumentationReports and any separate application or certification work.
Repeat workMeasurements and engineering time following modifications or a failed test.

Compare quotations on the same basis

Check that each laboratory has priced the same program. Confirm the relevant accreditation coverage, included reporting, scheduling assumptions and arrangements for technical support. A lower initial figure may cover fewer activities. Ask which services are outside the quotation and whether travel, shipping or separate approval charges need their own budget.

Allow for development and retesting

The cost of resolving an EMC problem can extend beyond the laboratory invoice. Engineering investigation, modified circuit boards, replacement parts and repeat visits can all affect the project budget. Keep an allowance for corrective work rather than assuming the first formal test will conclude the program.

A pre-compliance investigation provides measurements while changes are still practical. It can help compare design options and locate an interference source before the final configuration is submitted. Its value depends on the problem and the investigation; it does not replace the formal program.

Ways to control the total cost

  • Agree the test scope before booking and describe every intended market.
  • Prepare a working sample with the necessary accessories and repeatable operating modes.
  • Review opportunities to reuse suitable measurements across market requirements.
  • Identify known problems before formal testing and agree how modifications will be handled.
  • Clarify the charges and scheduling arrangements for additional work.

Information needed for an EMC testing quotation

Provide the product description, model and variants, target markets, requested standards, dimensions and mass, power requirements, ports and cables, operating modes and preferred schedule. Include previous results and state whether pre-compliance work is required.
